Working with a queer activist editor/writer who publishes a weekly children’s literature and a popular culture magazine reminiscent of their early childhood, they briefed me on creating a childish visual language that carries the comforting quality of being a make-believe princess.
I believe what makes this project worthy of including in my portfolio is the challenge of creating a connection that is strong enough to go beyond the brand and survive as a snapshot of the beauty we observe in our defense mechanisms. Me and my collaborator wanted to emphasize the involuntary resort to escapism that individuals such as themself go through in the degenerative* political state of Turkey.
In order to create this “girly” childish style, I used the common iconography of fairytales. To make the drawings in a hand-drawn style, I actually used a pink marker that I had kept since my childhood on a sketchbook and used these scanned designs for the end product. In addition, I made a hand-crafted font especially for this brand to be coherently used with the visual identity.
